Amid the escalating gang violence and political turmoil gripping Haiti, India has launched a rescue mission to repatriate its citizens from the troubled Caribbean nation.
As reported by The Hindu, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar unveiled the commencement of "Operation Indravati" on Thursday (21 March), with the primary objective of evacuating Indian nationals from Haiti to the neighboring Dominican Republic.
Jaishankar, emphasizing India's unwavering dedication to the safety and well-being of its citizens overseas, confirmed the successful evacuation of 12 individuals on the inaugural day of the operation.
"India begins Operation Indravati to evacuate its nationals from Haiti to the Dominican Republic.12 Indians evacuated today. Fully committed to the security and well-being of our nationals abroad.Thank the Government of the Dominican Republic for their support," said Jaishankar in a social media post.
The decision to initiate the operation comes against the backdrop of escalating security concerns in Haiti, marked by a surge in gang violence and targeted attacks on critical infrastructure, in a bid to pressure Prime Minister Ariel Henry into stepping down.
With India lacking a diplomatic mission in Haiti, monitoring of the situation remains the responsibility of its embassy in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic.
Approximately 60 out of an estimated 75 to 90 Indian nationals in Haiti have registered their intent to return to India, according to External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal's remarks during a media briefing on 15 March.
