India Pushes For Co-Production Of Javelin Missiles With US To Enhance Defence Readiness: Report

India has reportedly submitted a Letter of Request (LoR) to the US government, seeking to co-produce Javelin anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), The Hindu reported, citing defence sources.

According to a senior defence source cited in the report, the talks are in advanced stage.

The official noted that indigenous co‑production would ensure operational readiness and reduce the dependability on foreign support, while aligning with the government’s Make in India priorities.

Javelin is one of the most advanced third-generation ATGMs in the world. 

US defence majors Raytheon and Lockheed Martin jointly manufacture the Javelin weapon system.

The missile’s portable, shoulder-fired design, coupled with precision fire-and-forget infrared seeker and top-attack warhead, offers a powerful advantage against armoured vehicles—particularly in rugged terrains like Ladakh and along the China and Pakistan borders.

Besides long-term production, India has also sought emergency procurement of Javelins to quickly bolster its defences, especially amid urgent requirements along high-altitude frontiers.

India’s defence forces reportedly favour lightweight, shoulder-fired missile systems that can be deployed rapidly by small infantry units in harsh terrain.
