India’s railway network has seen a remarkable achievement, with nearly 99 per cent of the broad gauge routes now electrified.
This milestone was reached as part of a government-driven mission to electrify the railways.
According to a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha by Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, before 2014, 21,801 kilometers of track were electrified, while from 2014 to 2025, an additional 46,900 kilometers of track were electrified.
Vaishnaw said that the electrification of railway network on Indian Railways has been taken up in mission mode.
"So far, about 99% of Broad Gauge (BG) network has been electrified. The electrification in remaining network has been taken up," he said.
The push for electrification is aligned with the government’s broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency in the transportation sector.
This move also enhances the railway’s capacity to support India’s growing travel and cargo transport needs.
In addition to the electrification effort, the Indian Railways is actively modernising its stations through the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
This programme is focused on the development of 1,337 stations across the country, with improvements to amenities, accessibility, and integration with urban infrastructure.
"Development works at railway stations across the country under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme have been taken up at a good pace. Till now, phase-l works of 105 stations across the country have been completed under this scheme," Vaishnaw said.
