India's largest solar cell manufacturing gigafactory facility has been inaugurated in Gujarat's Chikhali.

The state-of-the-art 5.4 GW solar cell manufacturing facility of Warree Energy was inaugurated by Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi.

The facility is spread across 150 acres with a built-up area of 101 acres.

"As India's largest state-of-the-art solar cell production plant, this landmark achievement is a decisive step towards strengthening the domestic solar supply chain and reducing dependence on imports," the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said in a statement.

Speaking at the occasion, Union Minister Joshi said, "The launch of one of largest solar cell facility embodies the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat and stands as a tribute to India’s growing prowess in the global renewable energy landscape. Waaree’s commitment to indigenous manufacturing aligns perfectly with our national vision of establishing India as a global manufacturing hub for clean energy technologies".

Joshi said that in the last 10 years, India's solar power capacity has increased from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 104 GW at present, showing a significant increase of 3,580 per cent.

He said that the emphasis on module production has also increased and its capacity has increased from 2 GW in 2014 to 80 GW at present.

In 2014, the production of Solar Cells and Wafers did not exist, but today India has 25 GW of cells and 2 GW of Wafers produces.

To give a further boost to this, the government has issued guidelines stating that all solar PV modules used in projects will have to get their solar cells from ALM list-II starting from 1 June 2026.

The minister expressed confidence that the production of solar modules will skyrocket and reach 150 GW by 2030.

"Our capacity for solar cells will increase to 100 GW, with wafer production reaching 40 GW," he said.

Hitesh Doshi, chairman and managing director, Waaree Energies Ltd., stated, “Today, with the launch of our 5.4 GW solar cell gigafactory in Chikhli, Waaree is laying the foundational cornerstone of India’s energy independence and technological renaissance".
