India has significantly reduced the issuance of medical visas to Bangladeshis, citing staffing shortages at its embassy in Dhaka, Reuters reported citing sources.
The move, which comes as ties between the two nations worsen, has created an opportunity for China to expand its influence by offering similar healthcare access.
Until August 2024, India issued between 5,000 and 7,000 medical visas per day.
However, this number has now dropped below 1,000, according to diplomatic sources cited in Reuters report.
In 2023, India granted over 2 million visas to Bangladeshis, with medical travel making up the bulk of approvals.
The slowdown has led some Bangladeshis to seek treatment in Thailand and China, filling the gap left by India’s reduced access.
The decline in visa approvals comes after the ouster of Sheikh Hasina's government, which has been replaced by an interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus, a shift that has altered diplomatic engagements.
India's delayed visa processing is causing frustration among both the Bangladeshi government and its citizens, potentially straining long-term bilateral ties.
India, however, has not engaged formally with any Bangladeshi politicians since the political transition.
As India slows its visa approvals, China is increasing its outreach.
Beijing is reportedly considering opening a "friendship hospital" in Dhaka to provide easier medical access for Bangladeshis.
Additionally, a delegation from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) recently visited China at Beijing’s invitation, signalling growing diplomatic ties.
Indian officials attribute the visa delays to staff shortages and security concerns at the Dhaka embassy.
