Indore is gearing up to launch its much-awaited metro rail services, with the submission of essential documents to the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) in its final phase.

Officials from the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) indicated that the metro services are expected to commence either later this month or in February, pending CMRS approval.

“The work of submitting necessary documents to the CMRS from the MPMRCL is in the final stage. After the submission, the CMRS will take stock of the security arrangements by fixing the date of inspection of the depot and stations of the metro rail,” an MPMRCL official said, as reported by Financial Express.

The first phase of operations will focus on a 5.90 km priority corridor, connecting Gandhi Nagar station to station number three on the Super Corridor.

This stretch witnessed its first trial run in September last year.

Despite the excitement surrounding the launch, officials expect that passenger demand might initially be low due to the dispersed population along the route.

However, they remain optimistic about the metro's scalability.

“Once the metro rail starts and its route stretches, there won’t be a shortage of passengers,” the MPMRCL official added.

Stations along the priority corridor have been designed to accommodate six-coach trains. Initially, three-coach trains will operate, with the capacity to add three more coaches based on passenger demand. Each metro car can carry up to 300 passengers, including 50 seated.

The foundation stone for the Indore Metro Rail Project was laid on 14 September 2019.

The Rs 7,500.80 crore project envisions a 31.50 km ring-shaped metro corridor connecting key areas of the city.
