Infosys Founder Narayana Murthy, Wife Sudha Decline To Participate In Karnataka Caste Survey: Report

Infosys founder Narayana Murthy and his wife Sudha Murty have declined to participate in Karnataka’s ongoing Social and Educational Survey, saying that they do not belong to any backward community, The Hindu reported, citing sources in the BBMP.

When survey enumerators visited their home a few days ago, Sudha Murty and Narayana Murthy reportedly told them, “We don’t want the survey conducted at our home.”

Sudha Murty also signed a self-declaration form refusing to provide information, as issued by the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission for the 2025 survey.

The pro forma reads, “Due to some of my personal reasons, I am refusing to provide information in the Social and Educational Survey being conducted by the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission.”

In addition, Sudha Murty reportedly wrote in Kannada, “We do not belong to any backward community. Hence, we will not participate in a government-conducted survey meant for such groups.”

The couple, along with Infosys officials and Sudha Murty’s personal assistant, did not respond to calls or messages seeking comment.

The survey, which began on 22 September, was initially scheduled to conclude on 7 October but has been extended until 18 October.

As teachers are primarily involved in the survey, the Karnataka government has declared schools closed until the new deadline.

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar assured that the academic loss due to the survey-related holiday would be made up through extra classes.

The decision by Narayana and Sudha Murty comes amid a state-wide exercise to collect social and educational data from various communities, with participation intended to inform government policies for backward and marginalised groups.
