Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed that he briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his recent meeting with former US President Donald Trump while the two leaders shared a ride in his Aurus limousine during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China, reported Hindustan Times.
“This is no secret, I told him (Modi) what we talked about in Alaska,” Putin told reporters at a press conference, according to Russian news agency TASS.
The SCO summit took place on 31 August and 1 September, drawing over 20 world leaders and heads of 10 international organisations.
Putin waited about 10 minutes for PM Modi before the car ride, which lasted 15 minutes to the venue of their bilateral meeting.
The leaders, however, continued their one-on-one dialogue inside the limousine for another 45 minutes, Russian national radio station VestiFM reported.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained that the two leaders extended their car discussion because of its importance.
“He did not want to interrupt the important conversation. But the 'home walls' of the car also played a role,” Peskov said, adding that the bilateral agenda was “really more than intense.”
PM Modi later shared a photograph with Putin from inside the limousine, posting, “After the proceedings at the SCO Summit venue, President Putin and I travelled together to the venue of our bilateral meeting. Conversations with him are always insightful.”
Experts in Moscow noted that the Aurus limousine offers high-level protection against eavesdropping, making it a suitable venue for sensitive exchanges.
They suggested Modi and Putin likely discussed issues “not for the ears of others.”
PM Modi reaffirmed India-Russia ties as vital for global peace and stability, while awaiting Putin’s scheduled visit to India in December for summit talks.
