iPhones Drive India's Mobile Phones And Electronics Exports, Apple Now Considers Making iPads Here

Fueled by a significant increase in Apple iPhone exports from India, electronics has climbed to the third position among India's top 10 exports in the April-June quarter (Q1) of 2024-25 (FY25), surpassing gems and jewelry.

Only engineering goods and petroleum products rank higher. In the same quarter of 2023-24 (FY24), electronics were in the fourth position.

Data from the Department of Commerce reveals that electronics exports surged by 22 per cent, reaching $8.44 billion at the end of Q1 of the current financial year (FY25), up from $6.94 billion in Q1 FY24 by $1.5 billion.

Mobile phones accounted for $4.8 billion in exports, constituting 57 per cent of the electronics exports. The iPhones contributed to almost three-fourths of the total mobile exports, reaching $3.5 billion in Q1.

Year-on-year exports of mobile phones in Q1 has increased by 30 per cent from $3.72 billion last year. Of the total $1.1 billion surge, $0.9 billion was contributed by the iPhones.

This means that the iPhones are responsible for 82 per cent of the increase in mobile phone exports and 60 per cent of the increase in electronics exports.

In this backdrop, Apple's vendor Foxconn is reportedly considering the assembly of Apple’s iPad in India. It can choose its Sriperumbudur plant in Tamil Nadu, for this purpose.
