On Monday (17 March), the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Police filed charges against social media influencer Orhan Awatramani, also known as Orry, along with seven others for drinking alcohol at Mata Vaishno Devi shrine's base camp, Indian Express reported.
The First Information Report (FIR) was filed under section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita (BNS), pertaining to the disobedience of a directive issued by a public official, at the Katra police station.
The administration of the Union Territory has prohibited the use and trade of alcohol and non-vegetarian items in the town of Katra, owing to its closeness to the temple.
Authorities reported that the suspect consumed alcohol on hotel grounds on Saturday, ignoring warnings that alcohol was prohibited. According to Reasi SSP Paramvir Singh, strict orders were given to apprehend the violators.
The police have stated that a team has been assembled to locate the suspect to demonstrate a clear message that there will be zero tolerance for drugs or alcohol in sacred places.
The issue surfaced when several photos started trending on social media, leading to widespread discontent in the town, according to IE sources.
Nevertheless, sources indicated that the accused had already departed from the hotel and the town by the time the police initiated their actions.
Police reported that along with Awatramani, Darshan Singh, Parth Raina, Ritick Singh, Rashi Dutta, Rakshita Bhogal, Shagun Kohli, and Anastasia Arzamaskina were also booked.
