The Delhi Police has arrested a 59-year-old man for alleged espionage activities, including links with a foreign-based nuclear scientist, and for running a fake passport racket from Jharkhand's Jamshedpur, an official said on Tuesday (28 October), The Hindu reported.
The accused, identified as Mohammad Adil Hussaini, also known by the names Syed Adil Hussain, Nasimuddin and Syed Adil Hussaini, was apprehended from Seemapuri in Delhi two days ago.
He was allegedly in contact with a foreign nuclear scientist based abroad.
According to Additional Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Pramod Singh Kushwah, Adil is a resident of Tata Nagar, Jamshedpur, which was used as a base for their illegal operations.
“Adil and his brother Akhtar Hussaini are suspected of supplying sensitive information to foreign countries and procuring multiple Indian passports using forged documents,” the officer was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
Police investigations revealed that the network was being operated from Jamshedpur, where fake identity cards and passports were allegedly prepared using counterfeit documents. One original and two forged passports were recovered from Adil’s possession.
He was arrested in a case registered under sections 61(2) (criminal conspiracy), 318 (cheating), 338 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc.) and 340 (forged document or electronic record and using it as genuine) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on 26 October, CP Kushwah added.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Police’s Crime Branch arrested Adil’s brother, Akhtar Hussaini, who had reportedly travelled to several Gulf countries and allegedly obtained three identity cards of a confidential centre using forged documents.
Authorities are now investigating how many individuals were issued fake passports through the racket.
Adil was produced before Duty JMFC Sahil Monga, who granted a seven-day police custody remand for further interrogation, Kushwah said.
