Two soldiers were killed in action during an encounter with terrorists in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir on Friday (13 September).

In a statement, the army said that a joint operation with the Jammu and Kashmir Police was launched in Chatroo, Kishtwar, based on intelligence inputs.

Security forces made contact with the terrorists at 3.30 pm, resulting in a deadly firefight where two soldiers were killed and two others injured. The operation is ongoing.

The same terrorists involved in the encounter in Kishtwar are linked to another encounter in Doda in July, when four soldiers including an officer were killed in action, NDTV reported citing sources.

These encounters has come just days ahead of voting in eight assembly constituencies across the Chenab valley, covering Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban districts, as well as 16 constituencies in South Kashmir's Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, and Kulgam on 18 September.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to campaign for the election in Jammu and Kashmir today (14 September).

Voting for Jammu, Kathua, and Samba districts is scheduled for the second and third phases on 25 September and 1 October, respectively.
