Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Thursday (4 September) virtually inaugurated the second phase of the JNPA Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT) at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Uran, Navi Mumbai, reported The Times Of India.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended the ceremony along with Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur.

Fadnavis announced that Maharashtra now leads India in container handling capacity with 10 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), surpassing Gujarat’s 8.2 million TEU.

“From today, Maharashtra and JNPA are hosting India's largest container terminal. For the next 100 years, Maharashtra will be the maritime superpower of India after completion of Vadhvan port in Palghar district,” he said.

“India will play a major role in the world's maritime economy, and that journey has begun today," he added.

PSA International (Port of Singapore Authority) developed the container cargo terminal under a public-private partnership, investing $1.3 billion.

The facility includes a 2 km quay, a 200-hectare container yard, and advanced port-handling systems. Officials highlighted the installation of 24 quay cranes, 72 rubber-tyred gantry cranes, and several rail-mounted gantry cranes to speed up cargo transfer between sea and land.

The terminal also integrates six dedicated rail sidings to strengthen multi-modal transport. Deep draft berths enable it to handle the world’s largest container vessels carrying up to 18,000 TEUs, significantly enhancing India’s competitiveness in global shipping.

With this expansion, JNPA has emerged as India’s largest container hub, marking a major milestone in the nation’s maritime infrastructure.
