Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed the state's chief secretary to study Tamil Nadu's policy on restricting Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh activities on government premises, according to Deccan Herald.
Speaking to reporters in Bagalkot on Monday (13 October), the chief minister confirmed he has asked officials to examine whether procedures followed by the Stalin government could be implemented in Karnataka.
The move comes after state minister Priyank Kharge wrote to Siddaramaiah on 4 October requesting a ban on RSS activities conducted on government and aided school grounds, public parks, temples under the Muzrai Department, archaeological sites, and other government land.
Kharge alleged that RSS shakhas in government institutions instil negative thoughts in the minds of children and youth that contradict India's unity and constitutional values.
Tamil Nadu has previously barred the use of public places and government property for RSS drills and meetings citing law-and-order concerns.
The DMK government has repeatedly denied permission for RSS route marches across the state, leading to legal battles that reached the Supreme Court.
In October 2022, Tamil Nadu authorities refused permission for RSS events at 50 locations, citing potential communal tensions.
Karnataka BJP president BY Vijayendra sharply criticised the proposal, stating that Congress has attempted to ban the RSS multiple times in the past but failed. BJP shared an old photo of Mallikarjun Kharge at an RSS event on X.
The proposal has triggered a political row, with the BJP calling it a distraction from governance issues.
Siddaramaiah stated that a decision would be taken based on the chief secretary's report after examining what measures Tamil Nadu has implemented.
