The Bengaluru City Police have arrested the main suspect who had been on the run for four years after being accused of masterminding the assassination of leaders who attended a pro-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) programme organised near Town Hall, as per a report by Asianetnews.
The incident took place in 2019 during a programme near Town Hall where Member of Parliament Tejasvi Surya and MLA Suli Bele spoke in favour of the CAA.
Bharatiya Janata Party cadre Varun, who was participating in the programme, was attacked and injured.
Six suspects were arrested following the incident, which the Kalasipalya Police Station documented.
Following the incident, the main suspect Ajaz, had fled to Saudi Arabia, where his brother-in-law helped him escape. After spending five months in Saudi Arabia, he returned to his wife's house in Kolar and remained there for the past four years, conducting car dealings.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials had collected enough evidence against him, and he was arrested by the Kalasipalya police.
The arrested suspect has been kept in police custody for 14 days as per the court's instructions.
He was involved in the attack on Varun and was the mastermind behind the incident. He was associated with the Social Democratic Party of India organisation.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
