The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) has urged political parties and legislators to take a fair and constructive approach to land disputes, particularly concerning Munambam in Kerala, where over 600 families face the risk of losing their ancestral homes, reported ANI.
In a statement issued on Monday (31 March), the CBCI criticised certain provisions in the Central Waqf Act, describing them as inconsistent with the Indian Constitution.
According to the body, the Kerala Waqf Board has invoked these provisions to designate private ancestral properties as Waqf land, leading to an escalating legal battle over the past three years.
The CBCI emphasised that only a legal amendment can provide a lasting resolution. The Waqf Amendment Bill should provide a permanent solution to land issues, including Munambam in Kerala, the statement read, urging political representatives to take decisive action.
Additionally, the CBCI called for an amendment of any laws that contradict the principles of the Indian Constitution while ensuring that the rights of religious minorities remain safeguarded. The rightful ownership of land must be fully restored to the people of Munambam, it stated.
The issue has gained traction at the national level, with Union Minister Kiren Rijiju voicing support for the CBCI’s appeal.
Sharing the statement on X, he remarked, "Catholic Bishops Conference of India appeals Political Parties to support the Waqf Amendment Bill. It is the duty of those in politics to care for and address problems and challenges faced by our people. For example, hundreds of families in Munambam, Kerala, and countless people across India have suffered and continue to seek a solution to protect their properties and homes."
