Kerala’s infrastructure landscape is undergoing a major transformation with the construction of the Aroor-Thuravoor elevated highway on National Highway 66, poised to become the longest flyover in the country, Hindu reported

At 12.75 km in length and six lanes wide, the Rs 2,200-crore project under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has achieved 65 per cent completion, with final delivery expected by May 2026.

The project will facilitate faster and hassle-free connectivity between Tamil Nadu & Karnataka, and also will reduce the transportation cost.

All 360 supporting pillars and 3,000 girders on the project have been completed, with girder erection currently underway. Further, work has also begun on three exit ramps and a toll plaza.

The project involves a workforce of around 2,500 labourers and 350 machines operating around the clock.

“All 360 pillars and 3,000 girders have been constructed. Girder erection is currently underway. Work on the three exit ramps and the toll plaza has also begun. The entire project is expected to be completed by May 2026,” an NHAI official was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

However, the construction of the project has also raised traffic challenges as the ongoing work over the existing four-lane highway has turned the stretch into a daily choke point, with long tailbacks and commuting delays becoming routine.

To help ease congestion, the NHAI has approved the strengthening of two alternate roads, Thuravoor-Kumbalangi and Thuravoor-Makkekadavu, as diversionary routes.

Once completed, the project promises to be a landmark in Kerala’s road infrastructure, dramatically improving connectivity along NH 66 and setting a national record for flyover length.
