The preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the third phase of the Kochi Metro has officially commenced, with Haryana-based Systra MVA Consulting India Pvt Ltd tasked with the assignment, PTI reported.

The consultancy has been engaged at a cost of Rs 1.03 crore, with the report expected to be finalised within six months.

The Phase 3 extension will see the metro stretch from Aluva to Angamaly, passing through Kochi airport, in a bid to provide greater regional connectivity.

“The initial work of extending the metro to Angamaly via Kochi airport has now commenced. The Central and State governments have already approved the DPR study for the metro’s third phase, which will ensure world-class travel facilities for people in the Aluva–Angamaly sector and drive growth in this region,” said KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera.

The plan envisages the development of a 17.5 km corridor, largely elevated, with nearly three kilometres proposed to run underground.

According to Behera, the preparation of the DPR will include field investigations, surveys, and engineering studies to assess the technical and financial feasibility of the extension.

The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Development is funding the DPR under its Central Financial Assistance Scheme.

KMRL had also recently floated tenders for the installation of ballastless standard gauge track on the Pink Line, stretching from JLN Stadium to Infopark Phase 2 station.

The contract, valued at Rs 127.91 crore, covers the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the track.

The project will be partly financed by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), headquartered in Beijing.

Bidders have until 1 September to submit their offers, with the tenders opening on 9 September.

The selected contractor will be required to complete the work within 16 months of the Letter of Award, with subcontracting permitted for up to half the project value.
