The Tamil Nadu government has firmed up the site for the proposed airport at Hosur in Krishnagiri district and is preparing to approach the Ministry of Civil Aviation for site clearance within the next two weeks according to The Hindu report.
The identified location lies about 15.5 km from the airstrip of Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Limited (TAAL), situated to the east of Hosur city in Shoolagiri taluk, between Berigai and Bagalur.
This decision follows months of evaluations and feasibility studies carried out in consultation with the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
Initially, the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation shortlisted five potential sites, later narrowed down to two.
After detailed analysis, the government found the newly finalised location more viable, particularly because of fewer physical barriers.
“The Obstacle Limitation Surfaces survey, done by consultants, shows that the chosen site has only about 75 obstacles, whereas the one closer to TAAL has nearly 350 obstacles. The site near TAAL has high-tension lines and a very hilly terrain. While it is not impossible to build an airport on the site near TAAL, the government may have to spend more for the project if constructed here,” a source was quoted as saying.
With the site selected, the next step will see the State writing to the Centre for approval. Parallelly, the Krishnagiri District Collector will begin preparing a land acquisition proposal, expected to be ready within six weeks.
Nearly 2,300 acres will be required for the airport, of which about 650 acres belong to the government.
Discussions are also underway with the Ministry of Defence regarding the creation of a separate air control zone for the project. Approvals from the Centre are anticipated over the coming months.
The move comes as Hosur continues to attract major industrial investments, with the airport expected to act as a catalyst for further growth.
