Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu on 25 October inaugurated the newly renovated Terminal 2 (T2) at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).
Flight operations at the upgraded terminal are set to resume on 26 October, just in time for the winter schedule, which is expected to see a 13 per cent increase in flight movements compared to last year.
According to Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), the GMR Group-led consortium that operates IGIA, the terminal will initially handle around 120 domestic flights daily, shared between Air India and IndiGo.
“The government is developing and transforming airports into world-class transit hubs at an unprecedented pace,” Naidu said during the inauguration ceremony, which was attended by senior officials from the civil aviation ministry, AAI, BCAS, CISF, and DIAL, according to HT report.
Naidu noted that Delhi now manages “nearly 50 per cent of the northern region’s total passenger traffic” and handles “nearly 50,000 transfers every day,” highlighting its emergence as a major international transfer hub.
He added that India is poised to become one of the world’s largest aviation ecosystems.
After being closed for renovation in April, T2, originally built over four decades ago has been completely modernised with upgraded mechanical, electrical, and passenger facilities.
The terminal now includes a self-baggage drop (SBD) system to ease congestion Digi Yatra across all entry gates and security zones, six new passenger boarding bridges, and improved sustainability measures, including the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said, “The reopening of T2 allows for more balanced airline operations across terminals, further enhancing efficiency and convenience for millions of travellers.”
With four runways and three terminals now operational, Delhi Airport can accommodate up to 130 million passengers annually, strengthening its position as India’s premier aviation hub.
