Lam Research, a leading American supplier of cutting-edge wafer fabrication equipment and services for the semiconductor industry, has announced an investment exceeding Rs 10,000 crore in Karnataka over the coming years.
The announcement was made by Mr. Sesha Varadarajan, Senior Vice President of Lam Research’s Global Products Group, at the Global Investors Meet: Invest Karnataka 2025, held at Bangalore Palace on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.
As part of this expansion, the company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to lease and eventually purchase a land parcel owned by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) in Whitefield, Bengaluru.
"Lam expects to invest over ₹10,000 crore in Bengaluru over the next few years to support our continued growth in India as we scale to meet industry demands," said Rangesh Raghavan, India General Manager, Lam Research, in a LinkedIn post.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized that this investment reinforces Karnataka’s position as a key player in the global semiconductor ecosystem.
Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw also welcomed the announcement, stating on X (formerly Twitter), “One more milestone in our semiconductor journey: Lam Research announces major investment of over Rs 10,000 cr in India. Big vote of confidence in PM @narendramodi Ji’s semiconductor vision.”
Founded in 1980 and headquartered in Fremont, California, Lam Research Corporation is a global leader in semiconductor fabrication technology. The company’s advanced equipment and services enable manufacturers to produce smaller, more efficient, and high-performance chips. Today, nearly every advanced semiconductor chip is built using Lam’s technology.
The company's customer base includes leading semiconductor memory, foundry, and integrated device manufacturers that make products such as non-volatile memory, dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), and logic devices.
With engineering labs in the United States, India, Korea, and Taiwan, Lam is a critical player in the global semiconductor ecosystem.
Since 2001, Lam India has steadily expanded its role in the company’s global operations, both in scope and scale. Today, the India Center for Engineering (ICE) in Bengaluru is a vital part of Lam’s global R&D and operations footprint.
In September 2022, Lam inaugurated its first ICE lab in Bengaluru, further strengthening its research and development capabilities. Two years later, in September 2024, the company broke ground on what is set to become one of India’s most advanced systems labs.
In July 2024, Lam announced its decision to expand its supply chain to India. Significant progress has already been made with several custom parts and high-precision components made by suppliers in India passing Lam’s qualification cycle.
Moving forward, the company aims to scale its India supply chain operations, reinforcing global resilience and supporting the semiconductor industry's evolving demands.
