During a campaign for the Lok Sabha elections in Mathurapur, West Bengal on 29 May 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleged that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal was issuing "false caste certificates" to Muslims, thereby undermining the rights of "original" Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

Speaking at a rally in Kakdwip, Mathurapur, Modi accused the TMC of obstructing the implementation of development schemes in the state with their mantra "eta hotey debona" (will not let it happen).

"To appease a section, the TMC government is openly attacking the Constitution, which provides reservations to Dalits and backward castes. In West Bengal, there has been an open loot of reservations with the issuance of false OBC certificates to Muslims," he claimed.

Modi noted that the Calcutta High Court had cancelled these false certificates but accused the TMC of refusing to accept the verdict and misleading Muslims.

He further criticised the TMC for allegedly preventing the implementation of central schemes such as those for fishermen, Ujjwala Yojana, and Ayushman Bharat.

Modi assured the Matua community that they would receive Indian citizenship with "aan, baan aur shaan" (the respect due to them).

He also charged that "TMC goons" were attacking establishments of the Bharat Sevashram Sangha and Ramakrishna Mission in the state.

"For a 'Viksit Bharat' (developed India), we need a 'Viksit Bengal'," he concluded.
