The Public Investment Board (PIB) has recently given its approval for the Lucknow Metro's East-West Corridor from Charbagh to Vasant Kunj under Phase 1B of the project, Times of India reported.

Now, the project is set to be sent to the Union Cabinet for the final approval.

A meeting of PIB was held in Delhi in the first week of May with the Union finance secretary presiding over the proceedings.

Earlier last year, the Uttar Pradesh govt had approved the detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed corridor in March 2024.

Following this, the Network Planning Group (NPG) in Delhi granted clearance on 9 July 2024.

The corridor will include 12 stations — seven underground (Charbagh, Gautam Buddha Marg, Aminabad, Pandeyganj, City Railway Station, Medical Chauraha, Chowk) and five elevated (Thakurganj, Balaganj, Sarfarazganj, Moosabagh, and Vasant Kunj).

The corridor’s connection with the currently running North South Metro line with Charbagh Metro Station makes it crucial as Charbagh Metro Station will act as the interchange.

With improved access to densely populated areas like Aminabad, Chowk, and Thakurganj, the project is expected to significantly benefit Old Lucknow, while also serving the growing neighbourhood of Vasant Kunj. Upon completion, Lucknow’s Metro network will extend to 35 km.

Since its launch in 2017, Lucknow Metro has remained limited in scale, with a current network of 23 km.
