The Madhya Pradesh Cabinet has approved a proposal to construct a 29-km-long pathway and multiple ghats along the banks of the Kshipra River in preparation for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2028 in Ujjain.

The project, estimated to cost Rs 771 crore, aims to accommodate the massive influx of devotees expected during the month-long religious event.

State Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya shared details of the project, stating, “A 29-km-long pathway will be constructed between Shani temple (on the right portion of the river) and Nagda bypass. A decision has been taken to provide an easy passage for the visitors.”

The government anticipates around two crore visitors daily during the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, one of the largest Hindu congregations held every 12 years. To manage the crowd effectively, several new ghats will be developed, including dedicated ghats for saints from all 13 Akharas.

In addition to the pathway and ghats, the state has announced various infrastructure projects to enhance connectivity and facilities in Ujjain.

Last month, the Cabinet approved a four-lane highway project worth Rs 2,312 crore between Indore and Ujjain. This includes the Rs 1,370 crore Indore-Ujjain Greenfield Road and the Rs 239 crore Indore-Depalpur Road.

The government is also working to improve facilities for saints and devotees. Plans are underway to develop ashrams and dharamshalas in Ujjain, modeled after those in Haridwar.

The Simhastha Kumbh Mela is expected to attract millions of visitors from across India and abroad. Elaborate arrangements are being made for the grand event, including a metro line connecting Indore and Ujjain.
