Madhya Pradesh Gets Eighth Tiger Reserve In Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary—All About This Big Cat Den

The Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh was officially declared a tiger reserve on Monday (2 December), following in-principle approval from the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change through the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).

Officials highlighted the advantages of this designation. "Local communities will see economic opportunities grow with the promotion of ecotourism, which is expected to generate employment and improve livelihoods," stated an official.

The status upgrade allows the state to access NTCA funding, which will "ensure better management and conservation efforts for wildlife." Additionally, "eco-development programs are also set to provide further support to the region’s inhabitants," an official noted.

The notification outlines the core and buffer zones of the reserve, making it the eighth tiger reserve in Madhya Pradesh. The core area spans 763.8 square kilometers, while the buffer area covers 507.6 square kilometers, resulting in a total area of 1,271.4 square kilometers.

Situated in the Vindhya hills, the sanctuary includes the Bhimbetka Rock Shelters, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, alongside other historical and religious landmarks. Located in Raisen district, it boasts expansive teak forests and lies less than 50 kilometers from Bhopal.

The declaration was made under Section 38V of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. It identifies the core area as critical tiger habitat, encompassing nine revenue villages over 26.947 square kilometers. "These villages have been integrated into the buffer zone. This decision ensures that the rights of local villagers within the sanctuary’s boundaries will remain unaffected," said a wildlife officer.

This announcement coincides with Madhav National Park also receiving approval to be declared a tiger reserve. "The Government of India’s communication on December 1 paves the way for the issuance of a notification formalising the move within 15 days," an officer added.
