Indian Railways has set a new record by operating 364 outward trains from various stations in Prayagraj on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya on 29 January, facilitating the return of devotees after their holy dip in Sangam.
This marks the highest number of trains run in a single day during the Prayagraj Mahakumbh.
Additionally, 77 inward trains were operated to manage the massive influx of pilgrims.
The outward services included 142 regular trains and 222 special trains dedicated to the Mahakumbh Mela.
Addressing the media in New Delhi, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasised that the entire train movement was being closely monitored in real-time from a war room at Rail Bhavan.
Senior railway officials were coordinating efforts with the state government to ensure smooth travel.
The chairman and CEO of the Railway Board, along with general managers of the three concerned railway zones, remained in touch with the Mela administration and state authorities.
To facilitate orderly movement, the Railways set up large holding areas where passengers could wait before proceeding to their respective stations.
The minister urged devotees to follow administrative guidelines for a hassle-free journey.
On Mauni Amavasya, the North Central Railway operated 280 trains, including inward and outward services.
The North Eastern Railway operated 73 trains, while Northern Railway ran 88 trains.
Among these, the North Central Railway contributed the most, running 157 Mahakumbh Mela special trains, while Northern Railway and North Eastern Railway operated 28 and 37 special trains, respectively.
To further manage the crowd, Indian Railways deployed 360 special trains on Thursday to ensure a safe and comfortable return journey for pilgrims.
For the entire duration of the Mela, Indian Railways has planned to operate around 13,450 trains, which includes 10,028 regular services and more than 3,400 special trains.
So far, over 1,900 special trains have been deployed.
While services are running as per schedule, some trains have undergone route changes, and a few have been reassigned terminal stations from Prayagraj to Subedarganj to optimise traffic flow.
