The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) has shortlisted two firms to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed 20 km Shivajinagar–Kondhwa Metro corridor in Pune, which will include a spur line extending to the NIBM area, Times of India reported.

The proposal has reportedly already been sent to the Central government for approval.

Once an agency is finalised, DPR preparation is expected to take three to four months, with the Union government funding the study.

“We've received three tenders and shortlisted two firms. The Centre will fund the DPR preparation. After approval, the selected agency will begin work immediately,” a senior Maha Metro official was quoted as saying by ToI.

The new corridor aims to improve public transport access in Pune’s rapidly growing southern suburbs, particularly Kondhwa, NIBM, and Yewalewadi.

It will act as an extension of the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro line (PMR-3), currently being developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) through Tata Projects.

After completion, the DPR will be reviewed by the state government before being forwarded to the Centre for final clearance.

“The state govt will take the final call based on the report,” another official said.

MLC Yogesh Tilekar, who had raised the demand during the last monsoon session, stressed that “a dedicated Metro line is essential for this growing region,” citing the increasing traffic congestion and urban sprawl in the Kondhwa–Yewalewadi belt.

Meanwhile, the state government is exploring extensions of the Hadapsar line to Saswad and Loni-Kalbhor, aimed at enhancing connectivity to the upcoming Purandar airport.
