Maharashtra Government Mulls 104 Km Access-Controlled Expressway Linking Vadhvan Port To Samruddhi Mahamarg: Report

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is reportedly set to develop a 104 km access-controlled greenfield expressway that will connect the under-construction Vadhvan Port in Palghar district with the Mumbai–Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg at Bharvir, near Igatpuri, Free Press Journal reported.

Officials said the project is still in early stages but carries immense strategic and economic potential.

"The alignment has been submitted to the state government for approval. Once we get the nod, land acquisition will begin," a senior MSRDC official was quoted as saying by FPJ.

The tendering process will only be initiated once considerable progress has been achieved on the Vadhvan Port project, the official added.

The proposed route will begin at Bharvir Khurd near Igatpuri, linking with National Highway 48 at Tawa village near Charoti.

From there, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will take up the construction of a new stretch leading directly to Vadhvan Port, ensuring smooth connectivity between the hinterland and the upcoming deep-sea terminal.

Authorities expect the corridor to significantly cut travel time, allowing freight carriers to move between Igatpuri and Vadhvan Port in just 1 hour and 15 minutes.

This would also provide a crucial alternative to Mumbai’s congested roadways, streamlining cargo movement across central Maharashtra to the west coast.

Adding to its importance, the state government is reviewing proposals to develop a greenfield airport in the vicinity of Vadhvan Port.

Officials believe that the expressway, coupled with the port and potential airport, could transform the region into a major logistics hub, strengthening Maharashtra’s trade infrastructure and economic growth.
