Maharashtra: Mahayuti Government Delays Farm Loan Waivers As Ladki Bahin Yojana Strains State's Finances

Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate has raised concerns over the financial burden imposed by the Ladki Bahin Yojana, stating it has hampered the state’s ability to implement the farm loan waiver scheme.

Speaking to reporters in Pune on Sunday (5 January), Kokate emphasised that the scheme’s cost, estimated at Rs 46,000 crore annually, has disrupted the state’s fiscal balance.

“The burden created by the Ladki Bahin scheme has affected our ability to set aside funds for the farm loan waiver. We are reviewing the financial situation, and once the state’s income increases, we will move forward with the loan waiver scheme in the next four to six months,” said Kokate.

The Ladki Bahin Yojana, introduced in August 2024 by the Eknath Shinde-led government, provides a monthly allowance of Rs 1,500 to eligible women.

While the scheme was instrumental in the Mahayuti coalition’s victory in the November 2024 assembly elections, it has since faced criticism for straining state finances.

Kokate clarified that the final decision on the loan waiver would be taken by the chief minister and deputy chief ministers, with the state cooperation department overseeing its implementation.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare announced last week that the government is addressing complaints regarding bogus beneficiaries of the Ladki Bahin Yojana.

The financial strain caused by the scheme has sparked debates over its sustainability and the state’s ability to balance welfare initiatives with critical agricultural support.

As the state reviews its financial priorities, the loan waiver scheme remains a key demand from the farming community, with hopes that the government will find a resolution in the coming months.
