Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced an $8.3 billion investment in cloud infrastructure in Maharashtra’s Mumbai region, aimed at expanding the country’s cloud computing capacity by 2030.
This investment, part of AWS’s $12.7 billion commitment announced in May 2023, is expected to generate over 81,200 jobs within India’s data centre supply chain.
Between 2016 and 2022, AWS had already invested $3.7 billion to develop cloud infrastructure in Maharashtra.
The latest agreement between AWS and the Maharashtra government was formalised at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted the transformative impact of the investment, stating, “As we fulfil our vision of becoming a global capital for data centres, this collaboration will not only bolster our state’s technological infrastructure, but also create new opportunities for innovation, economic growth, and job creation. We are committed to fostering a conducive environment for such transformative investments and driving Maharashtra’s digital future forward.”
David Zapolsky, Senior Vice President of Global Public Policy and General Counsel at Amazon, emphasised India’s potential, saying, “At AWS, we see tremendous potential for India’s digital economy to thrive for years to come with the growing demand for cloud and artificial intelligence. This is why we plan to invest $8.3 billion into cloud infrastructure in Maharashtra by 2030.”
The Mumbai region, AWS’s first cloud infrastructure in India, was launched in 2016. As artificial intelligence and digital services drive global demand for cloud computing, AWS has been ramping up investments worldwide.
Recent announcements include €1.2 billion for cloud infrastructure in Italy and $11 billion in Georgia to enhance AI computing capabilities.
