MahaMetro Seeks To Monetise Green Credentials Through Carbon Credit Registration For Nagpur And Pune Metros

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) has initiated a consultant appointment process to assess and register sustainability initiatives across its Nagpur and Pune metro rail projects for carbon credit issuance.

Both metro systems operate with significant green credentials, with up to 65 per cent of energy requirements sourced from solar panels installed on station rooftops, depot boundary walls and vacant ground spaces.

The networks employ rainwater harvesting, bio-digester technology and green building techniques, with Nagpur Metro stations having received IGBC certifications as part of their environmental compliance measures.

The carbon credit initiative follows precedents set by other Indian metro systems. Delhi Metro has implemented various green initiatives as part of its environmental sustainability efforts.

According to TOI report, the consultant will conduct detailed surveys, carbon accounting, and international registration of the Metro’s green practices including solar power generation, regenerative braking, and the modal shift from private vehicles to public transport.

Funded jointly by the governments of India and Maharashtra, the project will be implemented over 24 months, followed by a seven-year operational phase during which verified carbon credits will be generated and traded.

The consultant, to be selected through competitive bidding, will receive a share of the actual carbon credit revenue as performance-linked incentive.

These credits, each representing one tonne of carbon dioxide reduction, trade globally at $5–$25 per tonne.

MahaMetro operates metro services in both Nagpur, which spans 38 km with 37 stations, and Pune, where 33 km across two lines are currently operational.

Pune Metro has recorded significant passenger growth and revenue generation in recent months, whilst Nagpur Metro continues to expand with Phase II construction adding 43. 8 km to the existing network.
