The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is intensifying its metro infrastructure push, with significant progress made on resolving key depot-related roadblocks.
In a recent interview with The Free Press Journal, MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, shed light on metro expansion efforts and adaptive strategies adopted to overcome operational challenges.
“Depots are the backbone of any metro operation. Without them, rakes can't be serviced or stabled, directly affecting commissioning timelines,” Mukherjee was quoted as saying by FPJ.
Mukherjee confirmed that the Mandale depot, vital for the functioning of Metro Line 2A and 7, is complete and ready for operations.
He also announced progress at two previously delayed sites: Mogharpada and Dongri.
“We’ve now secured full possession of both sites and commenced work,” he stated.
However, the Kanjurmarg site remains a sticking point. Legal and jurisdictional issues continue to stall progress, and while efforts are ongoing, the progress at this site is expected to be slow in the future.
To work around depot delays, MMRDA is introducing adaptive solutions such as rescue sidings, an approach borrowed from systems like London’s Tube.
“These sidings allow partial operations even without a full-fledged depot. Today’s trains are low-maintenance and can be serviced in open environments,” he explained.
Mukherjee also reaffirmed MMRDA’s commitment to sustainability.
All metro stations are green-certified, and tree removal is balanced with compensatory plantation and transplantation drives.
