Manipur: Indian Army Rescues Abducted Junior Officer Amid Continuous Ethnic Conflict In The State

Amid the continuing ethnic conflict in Manipur, a serving Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Indian Army, Naib Subedar Konsam Kheda Singh, was abducted from his home in Thoubal district on Friday (8 March) morning.

However, he was successfully rescued later the same evening after a rigorous search operation conducted by security forces in the state.

The JCO, identified as Konsam Kheda Singh, was on leave when some people barged into his home in Charangpat Mamang Leikai village at around 9 am and took him in a vehicle.

However, the concerted efforts of security forces led to the officer's rescue around 6:30 pm on the same day.

“The synergised efforts of the security forces resulted in the JCO being safely rescued at 6:30 PM on March 8, 2024,” the Army said. 

He was subsequently taken to the Waikhong police station near Kakching, where the Manipur Police initiated an investigation into the incident.

This incident marks the fourth instance of soldiers or their relatives being targeted since the onset of the ethnic conflict last May.

Last month, police commandos in Manipur valley districts staged an unprecedented protest by laying down their arms expressing disapproval over the abduction of an Additional Superintendent of Police and an attack on his home the previous night.

In November, four family members of a serving soldier were abducted and later killed in Imphal West district. They were identified as family members of Henthing Haokip, an Indian Army soldier serving in Jammu and Kashmir.

Since 3 May last year, at least 219 people have been killed, thousands of others injured and tens of thousands internally displaced and living in relief camps as a direct result of the conflict.
