Amid escalating tensions in Manipur and the withdrawal of the National People's Party (NPP) from the ruling coalition, a group of state ruling MLAs passed a resolution on Monday (18 November) outlining critical demands. These include a review the imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and immediate action against Kuki militants linked to recent violence.
The MLAs also called for a mass operation to be initiated within seven days against Kuki militants allegedly responsible for the killing of six people, including women and children, in Jiribam. They demanded that these militants be declared an “unlawful organisation.”
Additionally, the resolution requested the transfer of three critical cases to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). These cases pertain to the burning death of a woman, the killing of six innocent civilians, and the murder of a woman farmer.
The resolution warned that “if the above resolutions taken are not implemented within the specified period, all the NDA legislators will decide the future course of action in consultation with the people of the State,” as stated in the document released by the Chief Minister's Secretariat.
Meanwhile, Yumnam Joykumar, National Vice President of the NPP, on Monday criticised the N Biren Singh government, claiming it had failed to ensure the security of the state’s people and ignored their suggestions.
The Manipur government announced an extension of the temporary suspension of internet and mobile data services in the territorial jurisdiction of Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Thoubal and Churachandpur.
