Manipur: NIA Takes Over Three Cases From State Police Amid Escalating Violence, Civil Society Issues Ultimatum

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has assumed control of three cases of violence in Manipur, previously investigated by state police. They are:

1. The first case, registered on 8 November at Jiribam Police Station, pertains to the murder of a woman by heavily armed militants in Jiribam.

2. The second, filed on 11 November at Borobekra Police Station, involves an armed attack on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) post (A-Company, 20th Battalion) near Jakuradhor Karong and Borobekra.

3. The third, also registered on 11 November at Borobekra, relates to the burning of homes and the killing of a civilian in the area.

What has happened

Manipur remains on edge as violent protests continue to escalate, particularly in the Imphal valley. The unrest, fueled by unresolved violence and the discovery of bodies linked to recent clashes, has led to attacks on properties belonging to ministers and legislators.

This turmoil highlights deep societal divisions and mounting frustration over the prolonged crisis. Civil society groups and tribal organizations have demanded urgent action, with the situation threatening to spiral further without decisive intervention.

Civil society issues ultimatum

The unrest intensified following the discovery of six decomposed bodies, allegedly linked to a shootout in Jiribam where 10 Kuki militants were killed. The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has issued a stern warning to the state and central governments.

"All MLAs and leaders must come together to resolve the crisis immediately," said Khuraijam Athouba, COCOMI’s spokesperson. He cautioned, "Failure to act decisively will leave the government to face the people’s anger."
