Amid violence against minority Hindu community in Bangladesh, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Saturday (7 December) slammed Congress for its silence on atrocities against Bangladeshi Hindus, most of whom she said are Dalits.

BSP chief further said that Congress is responsible for the sufferings and losses of Bangladeshi Hindus.

"Hindus are becoming victims of crimes in large numbers in the neighbouring country Bangladesh. Most of them are Dalits and people from weaker sections…Congress party is silent and is now shouting ‘Be careful’ only for Muslim votes,” the BSP chief said addressing a press conference.

She further said that Congress, the Samajwadi Party and its supporters are “two sides of the same coin.”

Mayawati also pitched for action by the Centre and demanded that if their security can not be guaranteed, Bangladeshi Hindus should be brought back.

“In such a situation, the central government which the BJP is leading should fulfil its responsibility. So that the Dalit class people who are becoming victims of exploitation do not have to suffer… or they should be brought back to India by talking to the government there, because of the mistake of Congress, they are suffering losses,” she added.

Mayawati also accused the Congress and SP of prioritising political interests over public welfare during the ongoing Parliament session.

She alleged that parties like the Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) are using the recent violence in Sambhal to target Muslim votes instead of focusing on critical issues affecting the nation.

“Rather than raising meaningful issues, they are exploiting Sambhal violence as a tool to attract Muslim votes. This is purely for their selfish political gains,” she remarked.

She also alleged that these Opposition parties are fostering divisions within the Muslim community.

“They are even instigating conflicts between different factions of Muslims, like the Turk and non-Turk communities, which calls for caution among the Muslim population,” she added.
