The Union Health Ministry is poised to review the status of Delhi's Mohalla Clinics once the new government is in place, with potential plans to transform them into ‘Arogya Mandirs’.
This move follows allegations of corruption within the clinics, prompting the ministry to seek a report from the newly appointed Health Minister.
"The Union Health Ministry will discuss the plans and explore the best possible makeover of Mohalla Clinics as Arogya Mandirs in Delhi and will also seek a report from the new Health Minister on the allegations of corruption charges in Mohalla Clinics," sources were quoted as saying in a report by ANI.
In a significant policy shift, the ministry will also prioritise the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) scheme in the national capital.
This initiative, which provides free medical treatment worth up to Rs 5 lakh for poor and vulnerable families, was a key promise in the BJP’s manifesto for the Delhi elections.
"Another major step is the implementation of AB-PMJAY scheme in Delhi under which 51 lakh people are likely to be issued Ayushman cards," the sources were quoted as saying in the ANI report.
The scheme also extends to senior citizens aged 70 and above.
The AAP government had previously faced scrutiny from the Delhi High Court over its failure to implement the AB-PMJAY scheme, following a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by all seven BJP MPs from Delhi.
With the BJP securing a landslide victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, the party is now expected to fulfil its electoral commitments.
