Mumbai's long-awaited underground Metro Line 3 project is nearing a major milestone, as the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has commenced final inspections on the second phase, a 9.77 km stretch between Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli. Hindustan Times reported.

If all proceeds as expected, Mumbaikars can ride on the line by next week. Partially launched on 7 October 2024, the Aqua Line currently operates between Aarey JVLR and BKC, covering 12.69 km.

The upcoming section, including stations at Dharavi, Sitaladevi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, Worli, and Acharya Atre Chowk, awaits CMRS clearance.

The final 13 km extension to Cuffe Parade is expected to be completed by July 2025. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) is executing the transformative infrastructure project.

Sources close to the project told Hindustan Times, “The CMRS team visited the route on Monday, and we’ve been informed that a full inspection will take place around April 10. If everything goes smoothly, the line could open by the weekend or early next week.”

The BKC-Dharavi segment is notable for crossing beneath the Mithi River. MMRC officials submitted the inspection documentation last week, while the crucial Independent Safety Assessor’s report was received in March.

The CMRS is expected to review civil and structural works, track alignment, electrical systems, emergency mechanisms, and overall safety protocols before granting approval.

Once fully operational, Metro Line 3 will span 22.5 km with 16 underground stations, significantly easing congestion and connecting business corridors such as SEEPZ, MIDC, Andheri-Kurla Road, BKC, and Worli.

The route also improves access to residential zones and cultural sites like St. Michael’s Church in Mahim, the Shitaladevi Temple, and the revered Siddhivinayak Temple.

The one-way fare from Aarey JVLR to Acharya Atre Chowk has been set at Rs 60.
