The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) is preparing plans for a ropeway system linking Aarey Metro Station on Metro Line 3 with Goregaon’s Film City, with an extension to Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) also under consideration, Times of India reported.

The proposed project is expected to ease chronic congestion in the area while offering a sustainable transit option for thousands of commuters and tourists.

Officials explained that the corridor would stretch 2 to 3 km depending on the final alignment and is being designed to handle 2,000 to 3,000 passengers per hour in each direction.

“This system is being envisioned not just as a transport link, but as a clean, modern alternative that complements the metro network and causes minimal ecological disruption,” an MMRCL official was quoted as saying.

The ropeway will connect directly with Mumbai Metro Line 3 at the Aarey JVLR Station, ensuring smooth multimodal transfers.

Technical assessments are under way to decide whether a mono-cable, bi-cable, or tri-cable detachable gondola will best suit the terrain, capacity, and environmental requirements.

To limit costs for the public exchequer, the scheme will follow a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) framework.

While private firms will bring investment, expertise, and operations management, MMRCL will focus on regulatory approvals and integration with the metro network.

Film City, sprawling across several hundred acres, attracts heavy daily traffic from both the entertainment industry and visitors.

Currently, its sole major approach, via the Western Express Highway remains gridlocked during peak hours. The ropeway, cutting across hilly terrain, promises a faster, direct alternative while reducing pressure on the roads.
