Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated Tesla’s first showroom in India on Tuesday (15 July), marking a milestone in the country’s electric vehicle sector, reported The Indian Express.

The American EV giant opened its Experience Centre at Mumbai’s upscale Bandra-Kurla Complex, launching the Model Y SUV with a starting price of Rs 60 lakh.

Calling it an important day in the country’s automobile sector, Fadnavis said, “This is not just the inauguration of an experience centre but a statement that Tesla has arrived, in the right city and state, that is Mumbai, Maharashtra. Mumbai stands for innovation and sustainability.”

He highlighted the state’s efforts to build a forward-looking electric vehicle policy and added, “It is very important for Maharashtra that Tesla launched its first experience centre in Mumbai.”

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik also attended the launch event, which featured a showcase of Tesla’s premium electric cars.

Fadnavis further remarked, “It is a great moment for Maharashtra, and specially Mumbai, with the world’s smartest car Tesla arriving in India.”

According to the Chief Minister, the Mumbai Tesla hub will serve not only as an experience centre but also as a delivery, logistics, and service unit.

Tesla has also started bookings for the Model Y, which can reportedly run up to 600 km after a 15-minute charge.

Initially, Tesla will import the Model Y and sell it through its experience centres, offering both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive options.

Mumbai will soon have 32 charging stations, and Tesla’s services will expand to two more cities as part of the state’s comprehensive EV policy.
