The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is developing a public gymkhana in the city’s historic Fort area, marking a departure from the exclusivity that defines most of Mumbai’s iconic recreation clubs such as the Bombay Gymkhana, Hindu Gymkhana, and Parsi Gymkhana.
Unlike these long-standing institutions that operate on high-fee memberships, the new gymkhana will be open to all citizens, offering accessible recreational facilities in the heart of the city, Indian Express reported.
The upcoming gymkhana is being developed by redeveloping the BMC’s Krida Bhavan, a facility that previously served as an indoor recreation space exclusively for civic employees.
The redesigned complex will feature a five-storey structure topped with a glass dome and a viewing deck that offers a 180 degree panoramic view of Fort and Azad Maidan.
According to civic officials, the gymkhana will include indoor gymnasiums, swimming pools, a cafeteria, community hall, and parking facilities.
One of the floors will house a museum dedicated to Mumbai’s history and India’s freedom movement, making it a cultural as well as recreational destination.
The BMC has floated a Rs 33 crore tender for the project, which will be executed under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model, meaning a single contractor will handle the design, construction and maintenance.
“The objective of this plan is to provide citizens with a space they can visit and enjoy recreational activities. This facility will not cater to a specific section of people and will be open to everyone. Another primary purpose behind this plan is to engage with tourists in the Fort area,” a civic official was quoted as saying by IE.
Located on a prime plot in South Mumbai, the public gymkhana is expected to become a vibrant community hub and a new landmark for residents and tourists alike.
