Nagpur's Rs 260-crore phase-IV cement road project has missed yet another deadline for completion, prompting the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to grant extensions to defaulting contractors, Times of India reported.
The civic body’s public works department reportedly extended the timeline for Packages 1, 2, and 4 until December 2025, over a month after the original May deadline lapsed.
Phase-IV aims to convert 33 arterial tar roads, each 9 to 24 metres wide, into cement roads across key zones such as Laxmi Nagar, Dharampeth, Mangalwari, Nehru Nagar, Ashi Nagar, Dhantoli, and Lakadganj.
These corridors include routes like Central Jail Road, Chhatrapati Square to Besa, Ajni to Sita Nagar, and Manish Nagar to Laxmi Nagar.
Among the contractors reportedly receiving extensions are M/s Drishti Structural Engineering Pvt Ltd (Package 1) and M/s RM Dayaramani (Packages 2 and 4). M/s PK Nagrare Constructions, handling Package 9 in Dhantoli, has also requested more time, citing delays.
The slow pace of work has drawn sharp criticism, particularly during the ongoing monsoon.
“Commuters are forced to negotiate muddy detours, leading to frequent traffic snarls and accidents,” an NMC official was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
Several high-traffic roads, such as Ram Nagar and the stretch from Dharampeth Jhenda Chowk to Adivasi Vikas Bhawan, also remain incomplete and are unlikely to meet revised targets.
While NMC previously claimed to have converted over 690 km of roads in Phases I–III, the current delays threaten to undermine public confidence.
