Namo Bharat Becomes India’s Fastest Train, Achieves 160 Kmph On Delhi–Meerut Route: Report

India’s Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) has achieved the top speed of 160 kmph on the Delhi–Meerut section, making it the fastest train service in the country, reported India Times.

Covering 55 km between New Ashok Nagar in Delhi and Meerut South in Uttar Pradesh, the service surpasses previous semi-high-speed trains such as Gatimaan Express and Vande Bharat, which generally run at 130 kmph.

The operational stretch is part of a planned 82.15 km corridor running from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh, featuring 16 stations.

Once fully functional, Namo Bharat is expected to allow commuters to travel between Delhi and Meerut in under an hour, even with intermediate stops.

Manufactured at Alstom’s Savli factory in Gujarat, Namo Bharat trainsets feature aerodynamic designs and advanced safety and automation systems, including Automatic Train Protection, Automatic Train Control, and Automatic Train Operations, ensuring reliable performance at high speeds.

Stations along the route are spaced roughly five to eight kilometres apart, enabling trains to reach top speeds on longer stretches. Services currently run every 15 minutes, catering to daily commuters.

Plans are underway to integrate the 23 km Meerut Metro corridor, which has 13 stations, with the RRTS.

This shared infrastructure will allow smooth transfers between metro and regional rapid transit, enhancing last-mile connectivity.

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation, a joint venture of the Government of India and the states of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan, operates Namo Bharat.

Since the launch of the initial 17-km Priority Section in October 2023, more than 1.5 crore passengers have used the service.

With upcoming phases, Namo Bharat is set to transform regional travel, cutting travel times and easing road congestion.
