National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate C P Radhakrishnan filed his nomination for the Vice Presidential election on Wednesday (20 August).
C P Radhakrishnan, who is currently the Maharashtra Governor, was accompanied by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP chief J P Nadda and top NDA leaders during the filing process.
Radhakrishnan reportedly submitted four sets of nomination papers. Each set included signatures from 20 proposers and 20 seconders, all Members of Parliament.
PM Modi was the chief proposer in the first set of documents.
The nomination occurred in the presence of chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from NDA-governed states.
Radhakrishnan was picked as NDA's candidate on Sunday (17 August).
The announcement was made by BJP chief J P Nadda during a press conference following the party's Parliamentary Board meeting held in the national capital.
Radhakrishnan has previously served as a Member of Parliament and as Governor of Jharkhand and Telangana.
A veteran BJP leader, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore twice and previously served as the Tamil Nadu BJP State President.
The Vice Presidential election pits Radhakrishnan against INDI Alliance's candidate B Sudarshan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge from Andhra Pradesh.
The election is scheduled for 9 September, with voting by Members of Parliament.
The NDA holds a majority in the electoral college, which comprises 790 Members of Parliament.
The ruling BJP-led coalition commands support from over 400 MPs, based on current parliamentary strength.
Radhakrishnan, a former MP from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, previously served as Governor of Jharkhand.
The Election Commission of India notified the Vice Presidential poll schedule on 7 August, with nominations closing on 21 August, scrutiny on 22 August, and withdrawal deadline on 24 August.
