NEET-UG Case: Supreme Court Asks NTA To Declare Centre-Wise Results To Ensure Paper Leak Was Not Widespread

After hearing petitions seeking the cancelation of the NEET-UG exam and a re-test, the Supreme Court on Thursday (18 July) ordered the National Testing Agency (NTA) to publish centre-wise results.

"What is happening is that there is a leak at Patna and Hazaribagh is admitted... The question papers had been disseminated. We want to ensure whether this was confined to those centres or widespread," Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud said.

The matter was heard by a bench led by the CJI comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre objected to publishing centre-wise results in order to mask student identity.

"Students are at a handicap because they don't know the results. We want the students' identity to be masked but let us see centre-wise, what was the mark pattern. The results should be declared separately city and centre- wise," the CJI said.

The NTA has been asked to upload the results by Saturday noon. Earlier, the CJI asked the exam conducting agency to declare centre-wise results by 5 pm on Friday. On NTA's request, additional time was given to the agency.

The bench will continue hearing the matter on Monday at 10.30 am and it wants to conclude by noon. It has sought a copy of the Bihar police report that mentions how the students were made to memorise answers before the exam.
