Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu paused a security cabinet meeting on a ceasefire and hostage release under US President Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza Peace Plan to speak with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reported news agency ANI.
During the call, PM Modi congratulated Netanyahu on the progress.
Netanyahu’s office said, "Prime Minister Modi congratulated Prime Minister Netanyahu on the agreement reached for the release of all the hostages."
PM Modi later posted on X: "Called my friend, Prime Minister Netanyahu, to congratulate him on the progress made under President Trump's Gaza peace plan. We welcome the agreement on the release of hostages and enhanced humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza. Reaffirmed that terrorism in any form or manifestation is unacceptable anywhere in the world."
The Israeli Prime Minister’s office also shared on X: "Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu just spoke with the Prime Minister of India. Narendra Modi conveyed his congratulations to Prime Minister Netanyahu on the agreement achieved for the release of all of the hostages."
Israel’s government approved phase one of the peace deal, including hostage release and withdrawal from parts of Gaza. Officials said the ceasefire will take effect immediately.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner attended the cabinet meeting. Hamas negotiator Khalil al-Hayya said the agreement’s first phase guarantees an end to the Gaza war.
Earlier, President Trump called it a “momentous breakthrough” and confirmed all hostages will be released soon. He said, "We ended the war in Gaza, and I think it's going to be a lasting peace, hopefully, an everlasting peace."
