Mumbai is set to witness a major infrastructure upgrade in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), with plans underway for a 1.3 km underground pedestrian tunnel connecting the BKC stations of Mumbai Metro Line 3 and the upcoming bullet train terminus, Times of India reported.
The move aims to streamline commuter transfers and provide seamless last-mile connectivity.
The tunnel will likely be built 12 meters below ground using the push box method and will pass beneath the Vakola Nallah.
A 7m x 7m knockout wall at the bullet train station will be demolished to create the connection, a standard practice in global infrastructure projects.
The pedestrian tunnel will make it easier for commuters carrying luggage to commute from BKC Metro station to the upcoming bullet train terminus.
Metro 3’s BKC station is located at the Income Tax Office (ITO) junction on the Bandra-Kurla Link Road, while the bullet train terminal will be nearby, but currently lacks direct access.
The new tunnel is expected to reduce road congestion, eliminate dependence on feeder modes like autos and taxis, and ensure safe and reliable transfers between transit systems.
Whether travelators will be installed to ease the walk, especially for passengers with luggage, remains unclear.
A meeting of the officials was held on 1 July to plan out the proposal, ToI reported.
