The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a charge sheet against three individuals, including ULFA (I) chief Paresh Baruah, in connection with a conspiracy to carry out multiple IED blasts in Assam on Independence Day last year, The Hindu reported, citing officials.
“Baruah, also known as Paresh Asom, Kamruj Zaman Khan, Nur-uz-Zaman, Zaman Bhai, Pradip, Paban Baruah is the chairman and self-styled commander-in-chief of the banned terrorist group United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I),” officials was quoted as saying in The Hindu report.
According to the NIA, Paresh Baruah has been charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Explosive Substances Act in a court in Guwahati on Friday (13 June).
The agency said the charge sheet, filed on Friday, also names Abhijit Gogoi alias Abhijeet Gogoi and Jahnu Boruah alias Arnob Asom alias Huntu.
The NIA stated that the three individuals were "found linked with the IED planted by the terror outfit at Dispur Last Gate, Guwahati, Assam, as part of the ULFA (I) conspiracy to trigger multiple IED blasts across Assam, including at Dispur Last Gate," to disrupt the Independence-Day celebrations last year.
The agency, which took over the investigation in September 2024, said the IEDs were planted with the intent to cause death or injury, destroy property, threaten the unity, integrity, and sovereignty of India, and spread terror among the people.
