Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has directed officials to accelerate groundwork for the proposed greenfield airports at Puri and Paradip, along with the upgradation of the Rourkela airport, The New Indian Express reported.

Chairing a high-level meeting on air connectivity and aviation network management in Odisha, the CM highlighted the importance of regional connectivity in boosting trade, tourism, and economic growth.

As part of the plan, the transport department has approached the airports authority of India (AAI) to participate in the bidding process for the development of the Shree Jagannath international airport in Puri.

The Paradip airport project, announced by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari last year with a proposed investment of Rs 200 crore, will be developed under the state's Building Management of Aviation Assets and Network (B-MAAN) initiative.

Paradip is already a major industrial and maritime hub, anchored by one of India’s largest ports, which handles large volumes of cargo and supports numerous industries.

According to transport department officials, the AAI will soon conduct a land survey, identify suitable locations, and estimate the required land for the project.

Additionally, plans are in progress to upgrade and expand the runway at the existing Rourkela airport.

The meeting also reviewed strategies to enhance regional air connectivity by upgrading airstrips in locations such as Jeypore, Dandbose, Rangeilunda, Gautama, Satibhata, Raisuan, Tushara, Jamadarpali, Malkangiri, Amarda Road, and Utkela.

The Chief Minister approved the construction of heliports in 15 districts and directed the development of the Biju Patnaik Aviation Centre (BPAC) and the Birashola airstrip in Dhenkanal district.

The Works department was designated as the nodal agency to expedite these projects.

Majhi also stressed modernising existing airports and increasing flight frequency by engaging with airline operators.

A decision was made to restructure the Directorate of Civil Aviation to improve its operational efficiency, infrastructure, and workforce to support Odisha’s growing aviation sector.
