Kerala: Thiruvananthapuram Metro Project Gains Pace As Work Accelerates On Sreekaryam Flyover

Work on the Sreekaryam flyover, a key preparatory component of the upcoming Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail project is moving steadily forward, with the construction of service roads set to commence shortly, The New Indian Express reported.

Officials confirmed that nearly 90 per cent of the stormwater drain work has already been completed, marking a crucial milestone in the early phase of the state’s ambitious metro initiative.

The project has received renewed impetus following the first meeting of the high-level committee led by the Chief Secretary, constituted to assess and finalise the alignment for the metro corridor being developed by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL).

“We have given the committee all the details and information they demanded. The committee will be deciding and recommending the alignment to the government,” KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera was quoted as saying by TNIE.

Three main alignments are currently under review — Kazhakkoottam to Pappanamcode, Kazhakkoottam to Killipalam, and Palayam to Civil Station. Earlier, KMRL had submitted six proposed alignments for consideration under the conventional metro model.

An official from KMRL noted that retaining walls have been built in several sections of the Sreekaryam stretch and that the construction of service roads will begin soon to ease traffic flow in one of the capital’s busiest corridors.

The official mentioned that piling work for the main flyover is expected to commence by December, noting that the relocation of utility lines is already advancing rapidly.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan informed the Assembly that preparatory work for the metro is advancing, though alignment finalisation and DPR approval remain pending.

He added that the project report, prepared in line with the revised Metro Rail Policy of 2017, will move forward once the state and Centre grant the necessary clearances.
